If you’re curious about porcelain countertops and are wondering if they are suitable for your project, this blog may be helpful! This man-made product has been used in Europe for several years and has started gaining more popularity in the US. Porcelain is a compact clay made by heating a mix of powdered China stone, kaolin and various minerals. It is then fired at high temperatures to create a durable and dense material.

When we asked our friends over at Graniteworks about incorporating porcelain into a project here is what they had to say!… Porcelain has come a long way and definitely is a stunner especially when someone wants the look of Marble or a super high-end stone but may not have the budget for such a material. Due to its resistance to UV light, stains and heat, it is mostly successful on vertical applications such as a feature wall, fireplace facade, backsplash, vent hood wrap, etc. It is also great for an outdoor grill application because most of them have a good rating for outdoor use.
Although glazed porcelain is stunning option, it is not a fabricators number one choice for kitchen countertops or high use areas. A few problems seen during the installation and fabrication include chipping and raw edges. When using undermount sinks, raw porcelain at the cut edge is visible. Since the pattern or color is only printed on the surface it does not continue through the entire body or slab (meaning the interior may be a different color) which can be a negative.
Hopefully this little bit of information will assist you with your decision to use or not to use porcelain in your home! If you need any additional information or assistance with choosing the right material for your project, our friends at Graniteworks are always happy to assist!
