There were a lot of interesting home decor trends in 2022, but as we are now a few months into 2023, you can see that this year has even better ideas for what a modern home should look like. Whether you’re staging a home to sell or you want your home to look magazine-ready, these are the top trends to expect in the next few months.
Natural Colors and Textures
Natural colors and materials are going to be a huge part of 2023. Although the idea of all-white kitchens is still popular, it’s been infiltrated by the beautiful and warm tones of real wood, gorgeous stonework, and incredible natural fabrics.

These natural tones, avoiding harsh stains or vivid colors, allow the space to feel cleaner and more in touch with nature than any home usually does! This vibe can be brought out even further by using live herb plants as part of the decor.
SOUND ABSORPTION FOR REST
The outside world is a noisy place, especially if you live in a downtown area. Having high-quality insulation, roofing, and siding can take you a long way, but you can take it even further. Decorative acoustic panels, when placed creatively throughout the home, can absorb even more of the sound. This is especially important for areas like home theaters where you want the least amount of outside noise possible.
RETROFUTURISM
Retrofuturism has been a big deal and is only becoming bigger in 2023! This style ties back to media in science fiction films and stories of the 1940s, using their idea of the future to inspire the real techniques in our homes now. This doesn’t mean you have to have a fake spaceship in your home, but having updated items that are clearly styled from the first half of the 1900s to do everyday tasks can be incredible. This could mean having smart bulbs in retro lamps or a gorgeous mix of furniture and fashion that’s both minimal and retro.
STONE TOUCHES INSIDE AND OUT
Cooler colors are going to be more popular this year, with blue projected as the main color we’ll see in decor and design. This is a large shift from the muted greens that graced most of 2022 and allowed for more use of beautiful cool-toned stone. Stone on fireplace, beautiful stone pathways, and even cold granite countertops can all bring this look onto your property.
SUSTAINABLE AND ENERGY EFFICIENT
Energy efficiency has been a conversation in home design and decor for the last sixty years, and it’s not slowing down any time soon. In 2023 there’s going to be a huge push for energy efficiency and sustainable living and how affordable it can be for the average person. This push will require homes to have details like smart thermostats, updated windows and doors, heavy insulation, and smart features throughout. These changes can be expensive, so it’s important to consider what ways you can make these shifts in your home without dropping tens of thousands before you sell it.
A great example of this is updating your windows by replacing small portions of the windows themselves instead of paying $30,000 to update to having all storm windows. This saves money, achieves a similar result, and allows the property to feel refreshed.
FUNCTIONAL SPACES BEFORE ALL ELSE
Function is taking charge! As many people reach their third year of working from home, everyone is looking for a way to make their home office into the most functional place it can be. If you’re selling your home, and your property has at least three bedrooms, you should create a dedicated office space. This will give buyers a chance to picture a comfortable place to work, away from all of the noise and stress of daily life.

THE DRIVE BACK INTO DETAIL
Detail is more important than ever. This year, buyers are going to have the time to be pickier about the property they get, so you can’t rely on the bidding wars and instant sales that happened through most of 2021 and 2022. If you want to hold the attention of a family looking for the perfect home, you want to show them this property has everything they could think of before they could know they want it.

You can make your ceilings seem higher if you add molding to kitchen cabinets, and you can make your doors seem more bespoke and artfully made if you update the doorknobs to something fresh. Allow the details to speak for you and help your home tell a story about what life can be like here for your buyers.
EVERY PROPERTY COULD USE AN UPDATE
Staged properties sell faster and for more money than their unstaged counterparts. If you’re ready to dazzle with your house, consider some of these trends that will be blowing people away in 2023!
