If you need suggestions on how to choose the perfect light for your dining room, I have some tips for you! When designing a space, a lighting fixture can make a statement and steal the show if chosen properly. The light you choose can either add or subtract to the overall color of the space. It’s important to pay attention to the material, texture, color, size and location.
If you’re wondering if there is a rule of thumb for the placement and size of your light, there is, and in MOST cases it is important to follow these guidelines! Of course there are always exceptions to these rules but it’s important to understand the rules before you break them. First, make sure that your light is centered over your table. If you’re using multiple pendants, make sure they are spaced evenly, 26-28” apart. Having the right scale light above your table is important to make the space feel proportionate and pulled together. You don’t want your room to feel overpowered by the fixture and you certainly don’t want an underwhelming light choice.
You’ll want to hang your fixture so that its lowest point is 30-36 inches from the tabletop. To ensure that you or your guests don’t hit their heads on your light, make sure the diameter for a light above your dining table is one foot less that the width of your table if installing a round light. If your fixture is rectangular, make sure it is at least 6-12” smaller than the table in all directions.
If you’re deciding on what shape to go with, here is what I suggest. If your table is longer than 6’, you have a few options. You can play with clusters of smaller lights along the length of your table, a larger linear light or multiple pendants spaced apart.
